Workshops with Yousuf Ali Khan
Yousuf’s workshops give participants of all ages an introduction to a wide variety of Bangladeshi and Indian rhythms and some knowledge of the cultural background to the music and will experience classical and traditional ragas and rhythms.
Some of the instruments:
Tabla:
A two-piece drum set placed on cushioned rings, the base drum is made of metal and the treble drum made of wood. The tabla when mastered is capable of a wide variety of notes, tones and voices and is one of the main driving forces behind much Asian music.
Sarod:
A north Indian fretless string instrument with 26 strings. It has a deep resonating masculine sound and is accompanied by the Tabla.
Saringi:
One of the most ancient instruments in north India. It is a 40 stringed bowed instrument with a very mystical and delicate sound.
Participation:
Participation will include learning rhythms and songs and although you are very welcome to bring along any percussion that you have, it is not essential.
The sessions are customised for all ages and abilities from primary schools, through community groups and adult learners.
